Clean Energy Campaign

Data from the EPA shows that electricity generation is the largest source of industrial air pollution in the nation and a leading source of global warming.  Our ever growing energy consumption threatens the air we breathe, our waterways, our precious remaining open lands, visibility in our national parks, and the stability of our global climate.

Utah Clean Energy is helping to pave a new path as we work to advance a new energy economy centered on energy efficiency, clean energy technologies, and inexhaustible renewable energy resources.

Our Clean Energy Campaign is a successful, replicable program that unites citizens and local governments in the promotion of sustainable energy solutions.  This campaign works locally to address significant environmental issues and diversify our energy supply, thereby creating a more sustainable living and economic environment for Utahns.

Currently the communities of Salt Lake City, Park City, Moab, Sundance, and Salt Lake County are actively promoting sustainable energy and speaking out against global warming and its potential impact on Utah's economy, environment, and quality of life.  Grass-roots efforts create sustainable communities, serve as models for others to follow and lay the groundwork for sound energy policy.

Promotion of Renewable Energy

Utah Clean Energy works to increase awareness about the use of renewable energy by encouraging Utah individuals and businesses to purchase renewable power through utility green pricing programs.

As a result of these efforts, over 17,000 individuals and over 400 businesses in Utah are choosing clean energy.  This incremental adoption of clean power has reduced the annual output of 22,000 tons of greenhouse gases and other pollutants that would otherwise be released into our region's air. For perspective, this amount is roughly equal to planting 8,500 acres of new forest every year.

We encourage Utahns to invest in distributed renewable energy systems as a means to promote energy independence, energy security, and sustainability.

Utah Clean Energy also assists interested municipalities and rural electric cooperatives in the development and implementation of their own green pricing programs.

Case Study: Moab Blue Sky Challenge

In August 2004, the City of Moab and surrounding Castle Valley residents were recognized as the first EPA Green Power Community in the nation.  Rocky Mountain Power, Utah Clean Energy and the City of Moab teamed up and challenged five percent of the Moab area electricity customers to sign up for Blue Sky Wind Energy.  A year later, approximately 15 percent of the community was participating in Moab's green power purchasing program.

"If our community can make a difference by our participation, just think what a difference it would make if every community participated in some kind of green power program," said Mayor Dave Sakrison. "Moab's citizens care about the environment and are proud to be recognized as the first EPA Green Power Community in the nation."
