Heating and cooling costs make up nearly half of your home power bill. Taking simple steps to heat and cool your home efficiently will save you money, keep your home comfortable, and improve the environment.

Properly sealing, insulating, and weather-proofing your home is the first step towards improving the efficiency of your heating/cooling system. If you are planning to repair or replace an existing system with a qualified ENERGY STAR system, consider these simple steps:

  • Install a programmable thermostat
  • Clean or replace air filters regularly
  • Have your heating/cooling system serviced annually
  • Increase insulation
  • Seal up ducts and caulk air leaks
  • Weatherproof exterior openings
  • Invest in high-performance windows
  • Hire a heating & cooling contractor

More tips . . .

During the hot summer months, nearly 30 percent of home electricity usage goes towards keeping you cool. In Utah’s arid climate, evaporative cooling systems are one of the most efficient ways to cool your home -- they use one-fifth the energy of a central air conditioner. Evaporative coolers have added benefits - they humidify Utah’s dry air, bring fresh outside air into your home, and reduce pollen and dust. For a limited time, Rocky Mountain Power's Cool Cash Incentive program is available to customers who purchase and install qualifying evaporative cooling systems.

If you opt for a compressor-based central air conditioner, be sure to look for the ENERGY STAR label, and choose an air conditioning unit with a SEER rating of 13 or above.

ENERGY STAR has an extensive guide to sealing the outer walls, ceiling, windows and floors, or "envelope" of your home.  This Do-It-Yourself Guide to Home Sealing will help you seal air leaks to stop drafts, add insulation, and choose ENERGY STAR qualified windows when replacing windows.  Improving your home's envelope is the most cost-efffective way to improve your home's energy efficiency and comfort.
